Vazhaithandu Soup, also known as Banana Stem Soup, is a traditional South Indian health drink known for its cooling and detoxifying properties. Made from finely chopped banana stem, this light and nourishing soup is gently cooked with moong dal, pepper, cumin, and mild spices, making it easy to digest and soothing for the stomach.
Rich in dietary fiber and natural antioxidants, vazhaithandu soup is especially valued for improving digestion, reducing body heat, and supporting kidney health. Its mild flavor, earthy aroma, and warm, comforting texture make it perfect as an evening soup or a light dinner option.

🧾 Ingredients:
Vazhaithandu (banana stem) – 1 cup (finely chopped)
Moong dal – 2 tbsp
Water – 3 cups
Garlic – 2 cloves (crushed)
Pepper powder – ½ tsp
Cumin (jeera) powder – ½ tsp
Turmeric powder – a pinch
Salt – to taste
Ghee or coconut oil – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – few
Coriander leaves – for garnish
Lemon juice – few drops (optional)
Corn Flakes - For Topping
🔪 Preparation (Important step):
Apply oil on your hands.
Slice vazhaithandu thinly and remove the fiber strings.
Chop finely and soak in buttermilk or water with little curd to avoid discoloration.
🍳 Method:
Pressure cook vazhaithandu with moong dal, turmeric, garlic, and water for 3–4 whistles.
Once cooled, mash well or blend lightly.
Strain the mixture to remove any remaining fibers (optional but recommended).
Heat ghee/coconut oil in a pan.
Add curry leaves, then pour the strained soup.
Add pepper powder, cumin powder, and salt.
Simmer for 5 minutes. Do not boil too much.
Switch off and add a few drops of lemon juice if using.
Garnish with coriander leaves and Serve with Corn Flakes.
